Graham Potter looks to Jurgen Klopp for inspiration as Chelsea pressure mounts

Graham Potter has moved to alleviate the pressure he is currently under as Chelsea boss by comparing his slow start to that of Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Chelsea are toiling in 10th position in the Premier League and since Potter replaced Thomas Tuchel in the Stamford Bridge hotseat he has eight wins in 18 matches and only one victory in their last six league outings.

But Potter, who earned his move to West London after turning previous club Brighton into a competitive Premier League outfit, insists that the "picture can change quickly", even if things had not been "perfect" for him.

Speaking about the criticism he has faced ahead of Thursday's derby against Fulham, Potter said: "You have to understand it's part of the job. Football is emotional and when you lose you don't think about it, you feel it - the pain, discomfort.

"Sometimes it's hard to understand the why and it's easier to blame somebody. I'm not saying I've been perfect but it's always very complex. You try to put it into perspective and remember I am capable. The results haven't been good enough for us and you have to respect and deal with that.

"You have to look at my colleagues in a similar position, Pep [Guardiola] was criticised in his first season, Mikel [Arteta], Jurgen Klopp in his early seasons. If you look at what we have at the moment, and where we're at with the players we've got out, it can skew the picture a little bit. If we have those guys back, the picture changes."

Liverpool finished eighth in the Premier League in Klopp's first season, after replacing Brendan Rodgers in the early stages of the 2015-16 campaign. The Reds also lost both the Carabao Cup and Europa League finals. But if Potter can go on to reproduce the German's subsequent level of success with Chelsea, if given the opportunity, then the current level of scrutiny the 47-year-old is under will quickly evaporate.
