Graham Potter issues West Ham injury update ahead of Tottenham clash

Doubt: Niclas Fullkrug - (Getty Images)

Graham Potter says Niclas Fullkrug will be assessed ahead of West Ham’s match with Tottenham.

Fullkrug returned early from international duty after suffering a calf injury and the striker has only trained lightly.

The 32-year-old struggled with hamstring and Achilles injuries last season following his £27million move from Borussia Dortmund.

But Potter says his latest injury complaint is not serious, despite him being a doubt for the Spurs game.

“He’s had a slight issue with his calf from international duty,” said Potter. “So he came (back) early. He's trained lightly today, but we'll see how he reacts.”

Fullkrug, who enjoyed a productive pre-season, has yet to get off the mark for West Ham this term.

His injury could open the door for Callum Wilson, who scored off the bench as West Ham beat Nottingham Forest 3-0 to secure their first win of the season.

Potter says he has been impressed with how quickly the 33-year-old has adapted to life at the club.

“He's been great, as we expected,” said Potter, who was careful to say Wilson still needed time to get up to speed physically.

“Fantastic professional, great person around the club, around the training ground. We're still building him up. He hasn't had a pre-season with the team, so he arrived late. But his impact against Forest was fantastic.”

Potter went on to say it is currently “a big ask” to expect Wilson to start week in, week out.

But the West Ham boss said that whether he was starting or coming off the bench, he was confident the former Newcastle striker could make an impact.

“I think that's something we have to take a decision on,” said Potter. “I think it's a big ask. But I think he's the type of professional that, regardless of whether he starts or finishes, he can have a great impact for us.”
