Graham Potter has been appointed as the new head coach of the Sweden national team.
The 50-year-old has signed a contract to see out the remainder of World Cup qualification, and would stay in charge for any potential play-off and the summer tournament should Sweden reach the finals.
Potter has a tall order on his hands to qualify for the 2026 tournament, with Sweden sitting bottom of Group B with one point after four games.
"I am very honoured by the task, but also incredibly inspired,” Potter said in a statement.
“Sweden has fantastic players who deliver in the world's best leagues week after week. My task will be to create the right conditions so that we as a team can perform at the highest level and lead Sweden to the World Cup next summer.”
The chairman of the Swedish Football Association, Simon Astrom, said: "It is still our goal to get to the World Cup next summer.
"Our hope is to play the playoffs in March and all the decisions we have made now have been made based on optimising the conditions to be able to reach our goal.
"We have worked structured and focused on this process during the past week and with Graham Potter we get a strong and experienced leadership that has been tested at the absolute highest level, he says."
Potter rose to prominence during a seven-year spell in charge at Swedish club Ostersunds FK before moving to England to manage Swansea City. He was then appointed by Brighton, before short-lived spells at Chelsea and West Ham.
