Graham Norton confirms Eurovision 2021 is going to happen despite Covid

Graham Norton has declared this year’s Eurovision Song Contest will go ahead – one way or another.

Norton, 57, who has commentated on the competition since 2009, said despite the ongoing pandemic it will happen on May 22 in Rotterdam.

The Dutch city was to have staged 2020’s contest and its cancellation due to coronavirus had Norton in tears.

The chat show host said: “There’s definitely going to be a Eurovision this year, the competition element is going to happen.

“I think they’re ready for any eventuality. If some countries can’t travel, they can Zoom in a performance. I doubt we’ll be in a stadium full of 20,000 people.”

He added: “Everyone is so coiled and ready to get back to normal, I feel like the minute we can, people will leave their houses in droves. And Eurovision, it’s a joyous thing.”

The competition element of 2020 Eurovision was replaced by clips of old performances.

Norton told Sirius XM radio station in New York: “It was kind of reflecting on the history of Eurovision and on what we were all going through and it made me bawl like a baby.”

“I don’t know why I found it so moving - I think people were just laughing at me because I’m an old man crying.”

Organisers for this year’s event are preparing four scenarios about how the contest will go ahead and a decision is due next month.
