Graham Martin dead: West End actor found dead at home aged 50

West End star Graham Martin was found dead at home in May aged 50.

The actor, whose real name was Graham Reid, was discovered at his residence in Basford, Stoke-on-Trent on May 1.

Reports suggest he had been battling pneumonia prior to his passing.

He began his acting career in the 1990s and his theatre credits included turns in shows such as Blood Brothers, as well as Brighton Rock and Starlight Express in London's West End.

Martin, who hailed from Middlesbrough, also appeared in shows such as The Hollow and Sherlock Holmes as well as the Batman Live Worldwide Arena Tour.

Playwright Tim Churchill, who worked with Martin on Blood Brothers for 11 years, has revealed he was the one who alerted police when he hadn't heard from his friend.

Churchill, 49, told StokeOnTrentLive: "I was going to go to his house even though the lockdown was in place because I had a bad feeling.

"We got delayed because we had to go and pick up some stuff from a pharmacy so I decided to ring the police.

"It was unlike him not to have not been on social media or anywhere online. I called the police and they went around.

"It was such a shock and it knocked the wind out of me. I spent the rest of the day phoning everyone I knew who knew Graham because I didn't want them finding out on social media.

"The last conversation with him was when I wanted to know whether he fancied doing a read through of a play on Zoom and he said he would download the app and get back to me. He never did.

"Graham was a very talented actor and he had a big heart.

"He was one of the most professional people I've ever worked with. His work ethic was excellent and he would bring a sense of fun into the dressing room and still get the work done.

"He had that balance between getting the job done and having a lot of fun at the same time."

The actor was remembered at a funeral at Teesside Crematorium.
