Graham Coughlan praises Victor Adeboyejo's impressive debut but warns not to put pressure on the youngster

Bristol Rovers should be excited about new loan signing Victor Adeboyejo says manager Graham Coughlan, but he must be given time to find his feet he warned.

The 21-year-old striker my have only underwent a medical at Rovers on Friday before being announced on a season long loan from Championship side Barnsley late in the evening, but Coughlan wasted no time in throwing his new man straight into his match-day squad with Adeboyejo named on the bench.

And 11 minutes into his Rovers debut the powerful forward turned to celebrate with his new fans after dispatching Kyle Bennett's pin point cross first time into the back of the Plymouth Argyle net to earn a 1-0 victory in the final game of pre-season ahead of the club's League One opener away at Blackpool's Bloomfield Road on Saturday.

Speaking after the match at Home Park, Coughlan said: "It was an impressive debut but let's not heap too much pressure on too early, he is just a young lad.

"He is a very good player, let’s call it right. He is strong, he is quick, and that is what I have been looking at for the last six months.

"I have taken a shine to him. I have been looking at him in the U23s where he bagged goals for fun. He was at Leyton Orient and I was always impressed with him, I have tracked him for a while.

"I didn’t think we were going to get him, let’s be honest, but I am delighted that we did and a week before the season so I can get to work with him."

Coughlan sets himself and this Rovers side lofty standards and he was disappointed his side didn't score more goals as Ed Upson saw a header hit the post and Liam Sercombe had four excellent chances well saved by Pilgrims goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Reflecting on the display the manager said: "It was a positive performance, it was a performance where we created a lot of chances, we didn’t take them, which was probably the most disappointing part of today but we shaped up well.

"It was great to get 90 minutes into another couple of the lads it was great we showed that mentality and that solidness which has served us so well.

"I was relatively pleased with the chances we created and the efforts on goal, I was a little bit disappointed we didn’t take as many as we should of. But on another day, if we had our shooting boots on and that little bit of calmness in front of goal, we could have got a couple more, but it was a very good test."
