Graham Coughlan gives injury update as duo limp off in Bristol Rovers' EFL Trophy draw with Plymouth Argyle

Bristol Rovers manager Graham Coughlan is hopeful that neither Tom Nichols or Ed Upson picked up serious injuries in their EFL Trophy draw with Plymouth Argyle.

The Gas drew the game 1-1 before going on to miss out on a bonus point in a 5-3 penalty shootout loss.

Yet they were dealt an early blow when Upson limped off after five minutes, with goal scorer Nichols then being replaced after going down injured midway through the second half.

Speaking post-match, Coughlan said he was optimistic that neither player would suffer any lasting injury.

He said: "Nicho was just cramp I think and Ed just felt his quad tighten up.

"That will need to be looked at and investigated into why and how that happened.

"It's something we'll put our head on the pillow tonight, wake up in the morning and have a look at.

"I'm hoping we're not too bad and have come out of it relatively injury free and have a clean bill of health, fingers crossed, for Saturday."

On the game itself, Coughlan felt his much-changed side applied themselves well and gave him some food for thought ahead of Saturday's league game against Accrington Stanley.

"It's a defeat but there's more positives for me tonight as a manager than negatives.

"I've just said it to the lads, some of them have set standards tonight, some of them have really laid down a claim for a place in the team.

"I want that to continue, I want them standards to continue.

"I just said it to them that I would have swapped tonight's result for three points on Saturday, there's no doubt about that."
