Graham Coughlan explains why Bristol Rovers have signed striker Tyler Smith on loan from Premier League club

Bristol Rovers have confirmed the loan signing of striker Tyler Smith for the 2019/20 season.

Smith, 20, joins the Gas on from Sheffield United who were promoted to the Premier League last season.

Smith, who stands at 5ft 10in and was born in Sheffield, is yet to make a senior appearance for the Blades.

Playing his first season of senior football, the forward spent the first half of last season on loan at Barrow where he scored 10 goals in 23 games for the club in the National League.

In January he went out on loan to League One side Doncaster United where he netted two goals in 14 appearances but made just two starts for the club.

Both his goals came in a 2-2 draw with Burton Albion.

Smith has joined up with the Pirates squad in Ireland on their pre-season training camp. He joins Jonson Clarke Harris, Tom Nichols, Gavin Reilly and Deon Moore as attacking options at the League One club.

Speaking to the official Bristol Rovers website , manager Graham Coughlan said: “We are pleased to be able to bring Tyler to the Club for the season ahead.

“He’s a player that has experience at this level and is highly thought of at his parent club and has proved his ability in previous loan spells.

“Tyler will give us more options at the top end of the pitch and will complement well what we already have in the squad.  “He joins us at a busy time, but the next few weeks will see Tyler fully integrated into the surroundings and well set for the start of the season.

“I would like to thank Chris and the staff at Sheffield United for allowing this deal to take shape and look forward to working with Tyler over the coming season.”
