Graham Alexander makes Motherwell 'unjustly dealt with' claim as boss says it's back to drawing board after derby humiliation

Graham Alexander admits it’s back to the drawing board at Motherwell after suffering derby humiliation against Hamilton.

The Fir Park boss was sent to the stand after receiving two bookings for touchline dissent but he insists a first half horror show was the cause of their downfall which saw Stephen O’Donnell also red carded.

Well went down 3-0 to Brian Rice's magnificent Accies in the opening half-hour with Bruce Anderson, Ross Callachan and Marios Ogkmpoe on target. David Moyo added a fourth in the second half before Mark O'Hara's consolation penalty.

Alexander said: “The biggest thing in professional football is how you train and the knowledge you have off the pitch, and then putting it into pressure situations, and today we were found wanting, certainly in the first 15-20 minutes.

“We made poor decisions and that gave the opponent the opportunity to take advantage. If we had defended with the same ideas as we have done previously, they wouldn't have scored that first goal. And they know that. It's back to the training pitch and work as hard as we always do.

“We got going in the second half but it was too late by then.

“We had a poor start with the first goal which from our perspective was a really bad goal to concede. After the way we have defended for the last six or seven games, to give it away so cheaply.

“The players will know exactly how we should have defended it because of the work we have done and we haven’t.

“After that, the penalty I think is a harsh decision and to get Stephen sent off it is an uphill battle from then.

“We just told them to try and win the second half and play with a bit of pride and show we have a bit of character and I think they did that to be fair.

“But playing for 45 minutes is not enough to win a game of football, it is a 90 minute game and we were short over the 90.

“I haven’t seen Stephen’s red card yet, I only saw it but if we feel harshly done by then I would like to do it.

“We have given a penalty away and got a red card, they have given away a penalty and it is not even a yellow.

“Two wrongs don’t make a right but I do believe we can feel a bit unjustly dealt with on that.”
