Graffiti tag removed from historic plane in Colwick school playground

A graffiti tag daubed on the historic shell of a plane used by school children has been removed.

The large black tag was embossed on the side of the plane, which stands in the playground of St John the Baptist Primary School in Vale Road, Colwick, earlier in the month by vandals who broke in.

However, Gedling Borough Council offered to remove the eyesore at no charge to the school, which is run by headteacher Rachel Ireland.

Councillor Meredith Lawrence, a governor for the school who represents the Colwick ward, asked the council to remove the graffiti for free.

The council then sent in a cleaning team on August 7.

He told Nottinghamshire Live: "Hopefully the culprit will be caught, prosecuted and made to pay, as happened a few years ago when the Joshua Dale skate park was [vandalised by graffiti]."

In 2010, the Nottingham Post reported the school had been granted permission to use the old commercial plane as a wildlife classroom and changing rooms.

The project was the brainchild of former headteacher and plane enthusiast Chris Belton and the plane was bought from an Air Museum in Barrow in Furness.

It has remained a landmark in Colwick ever since.

Most of the graffiti has been removed, however, a faint outline of the tag remains on the side of the plane, which can be seen from Vale Road.

Leader of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor John Clarke, added: "It’s always upsetting to see graffiti spoiling and damaging our local areas, but to target such an iconic, well-loved part of this community is a new low.

"We've done everything we can to help the school remove the damage and graffiti caused and want to see those involved held accountable for their actions.

"If anyone has any information about this incident, please contact the Police on 101 and quote incident number 145 of 31 July."
