Graffiti over Shankill war remembrance art "shameful"

Graffiti which has been daubed over panels in the Shankill area remembering those who died in army service has been described as "shameful".

The graffiti was added to the panels sometime in the last week.

The panels already carry artwork in remembrance of the sacrifices local people made during the war efforts.

Shankill councillor Nicola Verner condemned those behind the vandalism and said it did not make sense.

"It’s incredibly sad to see the graffiti which had appeared on a number of murals in the community," she told Belfast Live.

The graffiti was sprayed on the part of a 522m wall which remembers the war dead (Shankill History)

"These murals have been installed to remember the many men and women who lost their lives and served their country in the wars.

"To deface them in this way is disrespectful and shameful.

"I will never understand why those responsible thought it a good idea to deface something so honourable with their pointless graffiti.

The graffiti was condemned by local councillor Nicola Verner (Shankill History)

"I hope the damage can be repaired and the murals back to their original condition."

It is not clear who was behind the incident, but the Shankill History Twitter account said that the person responsible had effectively signed their name to the graffiti.
