Graeme Souness warns Sunderland are 'staring down the barrel' and fighting for their future

Former Newcastle United manager Graeme Souness has warned that Sunderland are 'staring down the barrel' and are at risk of fighting for their future.

The EFL, along with the Premier League, has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus crisis, with uncertainty on how the season will resume.

While there is hope the Premier League and Championship season can be completed, The Telegraph has stated clubs in League One and League Two are split on whether to complete the season.

Cancelling the campaign who lead to significant financial strain on EFL clubs and Souness has warned that Sunderland could be dragged into the battle.

"You talk about Sunderland and I am watching Sunderland 'Til I Die. I spent some time in the North East as a player with Middlesbrough and I know how big a football club Sunderland are, I really do," he told Sky Sports.

“And they are looking down the barrels and being in danger of being dragged into this. I think it is about unique circumstances and people coming up with ideas, but ultimately it is about the survival of clubs.

“And that has to be taken and has to be paramount for these clubs to still be around this time next year.”
