Graeme Souness urges Man City to complete 'final piece in jigsaw' transfer

Graeme Souness has expressed the need for Manchester City to sign a new striker to be their 'final piece' in the jigsaw.

City have failed to find the net in six matches across all competitions this season, which is already the same number of goalless games they recorded last term.

Pep Guardiola's side were unable to prise England captain Harry Kane away from Tottenham in the summer, ultimately deciding not to improve their striking ranks, which has been a source of criticism this season.

And Souness believes that is something that should be rectified, making his belief clear by simply stating they 'need a striker'.

"We all know if you’re scoring goals everyone benefits. Goals change games like you wouldn’t believe. City needs a striker," he told Sky Sports.

"Jesus, I don't think he sees him as the final piece of the jigsaw. He works hard but he’s not the fox in the box Aguero was.

"If they get Haaland or Kane they would take some stopping. Harry Kane doesn't press but he’ll score 30 goals."

However, Richards explained it wasn't necessarily that easy as the player would need to fit into Guardiola's tactical approach.

"It can be debated," he said. Strikers would argue that if they were in the position they would score more goals. But the way Pep wants to play with the high press- Jesus is a striker but plays on the right because that’s where he wants to start the press from," he explained.

"Ultimately I think Pep wants a striker and if you got one that scores 25 goals then obviously it would help but we know City want to play on the front foot and if a striker can’t press, he won't get in the team.

"He did it with Ibrahimović at Barcelona. If you had Haaland or Ronaldo or Messi in this team I would still see them scoring 25 or 30 goals in the season."
