Graeme Souness Ukraine support earns Hotline caller backing as Scotland fans told to make World Cup sacrifice

We know it’s Scotland against the world this week with the rest of the planet cheering on worn-torn Ukraine in the play-offs.

But what about the Tartan Army?

It’s an awkward one for us, no doubt, and even patriotic Scot Graeme Souness admitted he’ll be rooting for Ukraine.

Souness said: “I don’t just want Ukraine to qualify, I want them to go there (Qatar) and win it."

That comment upset a few but he’s not alone in the feeling.

Robert Livingston, Palm Beach, said: “With the Russians committing unspeakable atrocities against innocent people, the country fighting for its existence, it would it be for the greater good if Ukraine did beat Scotland then Wales and get to the World Cup.

“It would lift the spirits of people who have lost everything. I must sound unpatriotic but watching Ukraine and its people being destroyed for me is heartbreaking. The World Cup could be their salvation.”

The game needs to go ahead though – and at least there shouldn’t be chaotic scenes like we witnessed at the Europa and Champions League Finals.

William McCarron, Glasgow, said: “After what happened in Seville and Paris the whole hierarchy of UEFA should be cleared out. These people who run the game do not care for the ordinary football fans, they only think of money not the supporters.

“The same lot fined Rangers 10,000 euros for a game starting a minute late, are they going to fine themselves for the Champions League Final starting 35 minutes late?”

William Laing via email, said: “UEFA or FIFA don't care about the ordinary fan. Unless the fans stop going to the big finals but that won't happen.”

On to more trivial matters, like the Old Firm transfer windows.

Henry Moffat, Stirling, said: “The sports writers all said Rangers players Morelos, Barasic, Kamara and Kent would all go for £30m each and you wouldn’t get that for the lot of them now.

“So we will see who is right over Calvin Bassey. He was torn apart by Celtic at Parkhead and Ibrox and made a couple of howlers in the Europa League Final. Aston villa are already looking elsewhere.”

Not sure we all did, but anyway, Gary Stevenson, Newtonill, said: “So out of touch Gordon Ashley thinks that Calvin Bassey is worth £7m or £8m million tops.

“I cannot say I am surprised as his figures have been wrong for years. Watch this space Gordon. Another error to add to your embarrassment list.”

John Bruce, Glasgow, said: “When Celtic fans talk about their Champions League bounty, they seem to be missing one point – Rangers have already banked almost £40m from their Euro run and stand a good chance of joining Celtic in the group stage of the Champions League and adding to that sum next season.

“Rangers look well set to add quality players to their squad. Celtic will have to spend almost £20 million just to buy their loan players and stand still.”

Scott McKenna helped fire Nottingham Forest to the Premier League and it’s got some folk thinking.

John Scott, Grassmoor, said: “There's a huge difference between the English and Scottish play-offs.

“England's main prize was designed to gain promotion. Ours is loaded in favour of a Premiership team avoiding relegation.

“It should be a one-off game at a neutral ground such as Pittodrie, Easter Road, Tynecastle or Rugby Park.

“We can never match the finances attached to the English version but a one game, winner takes all playoff final would create excitement both in the media and with respective teams supporters.”

Meanwhile, John Davidson, Armadale , said: “Very nice to see Aberdeen benefit from Nottingham Forest getting back to the EPL to the tune of £1m.

“Hopefully they can put it to good use and build a team to get back to the top six next season.”

Let’s hope McKenna can lead us to the World Cup first.
