Graeme Souness slams the Chelsea player at fault for key moment in Liverpool loss

Graeme Souness slammed Mateo Kovacic for his role in Georginio Wijnaldum's goal for Liverpool in Chelsea's 5-3 loss at Anfield.

Goals from Naby Keita and Trent Alexander-Arnold put the champions into a two-goal lead before Wijnaldum added to that.

Olivier Giroud scored right before half-time to give the Blues a glimmer of hope going into the second period at Anfield.

However, Roberto Firmino scored a rare Anfield goal to restore Liverpool’s three-goal advantage.

Christian Pulisic coming on changed the game for Frank Lampard’s men, though, and he set up Tammy Abraham to make it 4-2.

The American winger then scored himself, with an emphatic finish to cut the deficit to just one before Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain completed the scoring to make it 5-3 to the Reds.

The Wijnaldum goal, though, was a big one and turned out to be a big turning point in the game.

When the corner came in from Andy Robertson, Kovacic seemed to duck out of the way of the ball, something that Souness addressed at half-time.

Souness said on Sky Sports’ half-time coverage: “Frank will be annoyed. Why is Kovacic ducking? Why doesn’t he just head it out for a corner?

“His positioning is wrong. He just needs to head it back where it comes from or out for a corner.”

Frank Lampard’s side know that just a point on the final day of the season will be enough for them to secure Champions League football at Stamford Bridge next season.

Manchester United’s draw against West Ham United earlier on in the evening allowed the Blues some breathing space in the race for the top four.
