Graeme Souness slams Mike Dean for Timo Werner decision in Chelsea vs Leicester

Graeme Souness believes Timo Werner's penalty appeal in the first-half of Chelsea versus Leicester City was a "simple decision" for Mike Dean to make.

Dean did blow his whistle, but proceeded to give the Foxes a free-kick, with the referee claiming Werner dived after what looked like clear contact from Youri Tielemans.

The Leicester midfielder seemed to kick the Blues' star's calf after he stole the ball from the Belgium international inside the Foxes box.

But after a very brief consultation with the VAR, Dean did not give a penalty - something that former Liverpool midfielder Souness believes was an error on the referee's part.

Speaking at half-time of the crucial Premier League clash with Leicester, the pundit told Sky Sports: "He gets between the ball and Tielemans and Tielemans kicks through him, it's such a simple decision to give - it's a penalty."

Werner had a very eventful opening period, with the Germany forward having a couple of goals ruled out for different reasons, alongside the aforementioned penalty appeal that was turned down.

The former RB Leipzig man firstly found the bottom corner, only for the assistant to spot that he was in an offside position before the ball was played through to him.

Werner then thought he had opened the scoring, just moments before half-time, after finding the net following a corner from the left-hand side, but the German touched the ball with his hand - which was spotted by the VAR following celebrations with the supporters.

The 25-year-old is looking for his 13th goal in all competitions - which would take him one clear of Tammy Abraham and as the club's sole leading scorer this term.
