Graeme Souness sends Liverpool FC warning in title race with Man City

Graeme Souness says Liverpool cannot rely on their luck as Jurgen Klopp looks to mastermind the Anfield outfit's first league title since 1990.

Liverpool leapfrogged Manchester City back to the top of the Premier League table with a 2-1 win against Tottenham on Sunday, though their victory was gifted to them by a pair of Spurs errors.

Moussa Sissoko, the Tottenham midfielder, missed a glorious chance to win the game with the score at 1-1 before a disastrous Hugo Lloris mistake in the Tottenham six-yard box gifted Liverpool their winner through a Toby Alderweireld own goal.

Liverpool boss Klopp said he didn't mind winning in ugly fashion at this stage of the season but former Reds captain Souness was wary of the 'nervousness' with which Liverpool played at Anfield.

"They were playing with a nervousness that they're going to have to free themselves of over the next six games, because if they continue like that, it's going to be nail-biting stuff," he told Sky Sports.

What Man City fans might have missed from post-Fulham training session

"They've got to somehow shed that nervousness and get on with playing their free-flowing football.

"They can't keep relying on people making mistakes. Lloris has gifted that to them today."

City, who hold a game in hand over Liverpool, can move back to the Premier League's summit when they host Cardiff on Wednesday night, with Liverpool's next league outing a trip to Southampton on Friday night.

And Souness says his former side have a lot to improve on to take the crown from City in their six remaining games.

“Enjoy the day, analyse the day, but you've got to do better," he explained. "That has to be the message to them: they've got to free themselves of that nervousness and play the football that's got them to this stage.

"They've got six games to go, and they've got to win all six.”
