Graeme Souness and Gary Neville were not short of criticism for Manchester United's spineless first-half display against Manchester City as they ambled in at the break two goals to the good.
The former Manchester United right-back was in disbelief at the "terrible piece of defending" from Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the first half against City.
Souness, on the other hand, berated Bruno Fernandes' impact, or lack of, as he meandered towards Joao Cancelo, whose cross was steered into his own net by Eric Bailly, before Bernardo Silva poked home on the stroke of half-time in a catalogue of United's defensive errors.
"Watch Fernandes here. 'Look, I'm not going to close you down, why don't you cross the ball?' It's a simple thing but a fundamental thing, stop the cross," Souness ranted.
"Do your mates in the middle of the box a favour by putting some pressure on the ball and stopping the cross. That is a joke. The second goal is brought about by the same thing, players not doing the little things."
Neville's criticism came in the first half an hour, with United a goal down as Wan-Bissaka broke the defensive structure to press Blues full-back Joao Cancelo leaving acres of space for Phil Foden to gallop into.
The English winger did just that bursting forward before pulling back to Kevin de Bruyne whose shot was initially blocked before falling to Gabriel Jesus only for the follow-up to be brilliantly denied by David de Gea.
Neville, a former right-back himself, wasn't shy of unleashing the stinging criticism on the former Crystal Palace man as United almost conceded.
On the stroke of half-time, despite de Gea's best efforts to maintain a one-goal deficit, found themselves two down at the break.
A hopeful in-swinging delivery was poorly ushered out by Luke Shaw allowing Bernardo Silva to stab home, although a previously impressive de Gea should've kept it out.
But as Jesus was denied inside half an hour, Neville lamented the defender's pressing:
"Well I have to say it's a terrible piece of defending from Wan Bissaka, how can you leave Phil Foden there?"
"To go run towards Cancelo, it's absolute madness from the right-back. Once he's done that, Foden's in and you're thinking the inevitable happens. You feel De Bruyne is going to score, you're certain Jesus is."
