Graeme Souness reveals what surprised him about Tottenham in North London Derby loss to Arsenal

Graeme Souness was left surprised at "how poor" Tottenham were in their 3-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs were beaten at the hands of their arch rivals in the first North London Derby of the season after the Gunners went 3-0 up in the first-half.

Emile Smith Rowe, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Bukayo Saka scored for the hosts, with Tottenham replying in the second period, but Son Heung-min's goal turned out to only be a consolation for the visiting side.

Nuno Espirito Santo has now seen his team lose three Premier League matches in a row after defeats to Crystal Palace and Chelsea in the past few weeks.

Souness, when talking on Sky Sports after the match, was shocked at what he saw from Tottenham.

"I was surprised at how good they [Arsenal] looked, it was a bigger surprise how poor Spurs were," the former Liverpool midfielder said.

"The shape was all wrong, Dele Alli standing out wide right, Ndombele emptying midfield at any opportunity, you had the Danish players Hojbjerg he was holding hands with Dier all the time.

"When you analyse it, there’s no surprise that Arsenal dominated that first half.

"They brought Skipp on, Hojbjerg goes to midfield then they look a different team. Arsenal wish they could play against a team like Spurs were in the 35 minutes every week. Spurs were so poor.

"Start right - they were the last words you would hear, they didn’t do that."

Ledley King was also in the Sky Sports studio and spoke about his former club's disappointing showing at the Emirates.

"It was a better second half performance, Skipp come on and Gil was good when he came on gave a bit of energy and enthusiasm even for the goal it was a tackle, 50/50 ball and that’s where the goal come from so second half was something to build on," the former Spurs captain said.

"I think we gave them too much respect and the similar thing happened last year.

"It wasn’t until the final 20 minutes last year where we put the pressure on and we saw the mistakes and vulnerabilities.

"We saw it today, but we have to start better. You don’t have to always press but there has to be a point where you start engaging people and stop them playing and we were in between today."
