Graeme Souness pinpoints who is to blame for Arsenal's woes - and it's not Mikel Arteta

Former Liverpool manager Graeme Souness has refused to blame Mikel Arteta for Arsenal's current woes, insisting the club lacks players capable of winning trophies.

Souness made the admission ahead of the Gunners' Premier League clash with Everton at Goodison Park this evening, as the north London club aims to arrest a run of six games without a victory.

In recent weeks, Arsenal's league form has slowly worsened, with the club having lost four of their last six matches prior to the trip to Goodison Park.

As expected, the club's remarkable dip in form has increased the pressure on the shoulders of Arteta, particularly from the supporters, with a fair share of them calling for the board to make a change, despite the Spaniard having only been in the job exactly 12 months.

Mikel Arteta: It's impossible to have 31 happy players

Nevertheless, Sky Sports pundit Souness has looked at the overall make-up of the club, opposed to singling out Arteta, when analysing their current troubles, insisting the club is not blessed with enough "good players."

"There’s no doubt that when he got the job, everyone knew it was going to be be a big job for a new boy," Souness told Sky Sports.

"Managing today must be hard with the way players are, the kind of cash they get, the independence they have, the attitude that some of them have.

"There’s not enough good players, it doesn’t matter what manager you have in there, then you have to look at the people who are making the signings, the amount of signings and the quality of signings.

"Unless you give him something to work with, he’s not going to be able to do anything. You’ve got to have some of the best players around at Arsenal - with the size of the club, they’re in London, the funds they have at their disposal, but they’re just not good enough.

"You can go through their team, and if you’re looking to win things, they’ve got maybe two, three, or four players, maximum, that are good enough to do that.

"That’s the top and bottom of it.”

With the January transfer window now just under a fortnight away from opening, the club will be looking to add some much-needed quality to the squad, particularly in an attacking sense.

Goals have been hard to come by for the Londoners so far this season, indicating that they are still in desperate need of adding creativity to their attacking-midfield ranks.

Throughout the summer, Arsenal were closely linked with Lyon sensation Houssem Aouar, with no shortage of supporters urging the club to rekindle their interest in the midfielder come the New Year.
