Graeme Souness picks out the Man City partnership that England need

Graeme Souness would restore Phil Foden to the England team against Germany to complement Raheem Sterling.

The Manchester City pair both started England's first two games of the European Championship but Foden was left out of the squad for the final group match, with manager Gareth Southgate citing the risk of suspension as a reason. In the City star's absence, Jack Grealish and Bukayo Saka shone to add to the competition for places, while Jadon Sancho has the advantage of playing in the Bundesliga every week with Germany next up in the last-16.

However, former Liverpool midfielder Souness believes that restoring Foden to the front three is the best course of action that England can take. And, despite the criticism he has received - bizarre given he is the only player in the squad to have scored so far - Sterling should be on the opposite side to his club teammate.

Sunday Times columnist Souness could not find a place for City right-back Kyle Walker though, thinking Chelsea's Reece James to be better with his feet.

"I’d start with Foden and Raheem Sterling, who have the ability to switch flanks, Kane through the middle and Mount sitting in front of the two holders," he said.

"Reece James and Luke Shaw didn’t get forward enough against Scotland. Is that because of Scotland’s wing backs or because the occasion was too much for them? It shouldn’t have been, as they’re both used to playing on the big stage for their clubs. I’d go with James again because he’s better than Kyle Walker with the ball at his feet and he’s no slouch when he gets in a race."
