Graeme Souness pays emotional tribute to former Liverpool teammate Michael Robinson

An emotional Graeme Souness paid tribute to his ex-Liverpool teammate Michael Robinson after the former forward and Spanish television pundit passed away at the age of 61.

Robinson, who was suffering from skin cancer, was part of the Reds side which won the league, League Cup and European Cup in 1984, and he came on as a substitute for Kenny Dalglish in extra-time of the latter final in Rome.

The ex-Preston, Manchester City, Brighton, QPR and Osasuna forward was a well-respected figure in Spanish football broadcasting, and Souness was on the verge of tears when speaking about his friend on Sky Sports' The Football Show.

"He was a big pal of mine, I've got so many fond memories of being in his company. If you were going for a night out, Michael would be the first one you'd invite," said the Scot.

"A real charming man. A bon vivuer. He could tell great stories.

"I'm really sad for (his wife) Chris and his kids. I know he'd been fighting this for a couple of years now and its been difficult for him.

"He was a very good footballer. He enjoyed a good year at Liverpool when we had a glory year, and he was a big part of that.

"Then he took himself off to Spain and he created a life for himself in the media out there, and he was extremely popular in Spain."

Souness said that he had been in contact with Robinson recently, and even planned to speak to him on Tuesday.

"I'm absolutely sick for his family. It's a sad day for me," he continued.

"I've tried to ring him a couple of times in the last couple of weeks. Michael was a very emotional man, and he wouldn't pick up the phone to me, and it was only last night I was thinking 'I'm going to try him and try him until I get him'.

"But I thought I won't ring him now because he may be in his bed, and I was going to ring him today.

"Now I've not got a chance to speak to him."
