Graeme Souness has criticised Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta for a disastrous two-minute spell which allowed Manchester United to take control in their thumping opening-day victory.
Frank Lampard's side made a bright start at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, with Tammy Abraham striking the post early on.
But a clumsy Kurt Zouma challenge allowed Marcus Rashford to open the scoring from the penalty spot, before two quick second-half strikes effectively sealed the victory for the Red Devils.
Anthony Martial doubled the lead from close-range in the 65th minute, before a delightful pass from Paul Pogba allowed Marcus Rashford to grab his second just two minutes later.
Daniel James added gloss to the scoreline with a strike on his debut to hand Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side an emphatic 4-0 win.
But speaking on Sky Sports, Souness criticised experienced Chelsea defender Azpilicueta for his role in the second and third goals which effectively took the game away from the visitors.
Analysing Martial's goal, he said: “Azpilicueta for this goal and the next goal is at fault. This time, he allows Martial to wander in front of him, and that's poor defending.
“It's something we don't associate with Azpilicueta, he has been a great defender in our league and I'm sure he will be going forward.
“What's he thinking of here? He looks to his right over his shoulder thinking of some other threat, he just has to deal with the one that's immediate and that's Martial in front of him.
“It's a poor goal to give away for someone of that quality.”
Seconds after the restart, Chelsea lost possession and Rashford ran off the shoulder of Azpilicueta to bag his second goal of the game.
Souness believes the 29-year-old was still distracted by his error in the previous goal and consequently caught out of possession.
He added: “I think Azpilicueta would still be angry with himself for allowing Martial to get in front of him.
“He’s not thinking straight here, it’s so unlike him. He’s disappointed with himself, he’s not sensing danger.
