Graeme Souness makes shock Divock Origi declaration and slams Liverpool performance in beating Newcastle United

Liverpool great Graeme Souness believes his former team "got away with it" against Newcastle United - and claims to have never seen matchwinner Divock Origi have a good game.

Origi came off the bench to strike the decider four minutes from the end of normal time to earn the Reds a dramatic 3-2 win at St James' Park on Saturday evening.

The Belgian produced a similar moment to remember as substitute in the Anfield derby win against Everton back in December.

But ex-Reds and Newcastle manager Souness hasn't been impressed overall.

“Look at Origi against Everton, he gets that goal," said Souness to Sky Sports on Saturday evening after the match.

"He comes on tonight, I don’t mean to be cruel, but I’ve yet to see him have a good game.

"He’s got his team vital points in two games alone but I want more from him. They’ve got away with it tonight."

Another Liverpool legend, Jamie Carragher, believes Origi deserves credit for forcing himself ahead of Newcastle defender Jamaal Lascelles to gain the telling touch on Xherdan Shaqiri's free-kick delivery from the right.

“The only time he found himself in the centre was for the goal," he said.

"That’s when you wanted someone of that size and power. You see what he does to Lascelles."

Souness believes tiredness caught up with some Liverpool players following their exertions in the Champions League semi-final defeat at Barcelona in midweek.

“Mane never took part in the game," added Souness. "Salah goes off but arguably their best player all season (Mane), someone who has hassled and hurried defenders all season, didn’t take part tonight. That’s down to fatigue."

How the stunned national media reported on Liverpool's dramatic late win over Newcastle

By contrast, Gary Neville, who won eight Premier League title medals with Manchester United, regards the Reds' triumph as their most impressive of the campaign, with Jurgen Klopp's side again two points clear of Manchester City at the summit.

“That’s the best win I’ve seen from Liverpool because that to me is what a title race is - when a team is flagging or showing signs of vulnerability, they’re losing players, the crowd are up for it," he said.

"It had all the hallmarks of (a title-ending result), so that Liverpool have got through it, will make them proud.

"They weren’t at it. The team was all over the place, there was no shape, they were rash. But they got through it."
