Graeme Souness makes huge Harry Kane transfer claim amid Tottenham top-four challenge

Graeme Souness has urged Harry Kane to leave Tottenham Hotspur at the end of the season should Jose Mourinho's team fail to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Spurs currently have two realistic avenues of securing Champions League football: a top-four finish in the Premier League or a Europa League title win.

They are currently six points off Chelsea in fourth but have two games in hand on the Blues, including the crucial north London derby against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs can leapfrog Everton with a win against Arsenal, while Manchester United and Leicester City are not totally out of reach should they falter down the stretch.

Meanwhile, Tottenham hold a 2-0 advantage over Dynamo Zagreb in the Europa League last-16 tie and are strong favourites to qualify for the quarter-finals. Alongside Man United and Arsenal, they are among the favourites to win the competition.

However, should Spurs fail to secure Champions League football, Souness believes Kane, who is enjoying arguably the best season of his career with an incredible 21 goals and 15 assists in all competitions, should look to leave the club.

"If they fail to do so (reach top four) or if they fail to pick up silverware, i.e. beat Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final next month, then Kane should be having a word with his agent about new employment," Souness said writing in The Times.

"Even if they beat City, he might still want to think about leaving. He turns 28 in the summer, and time is running out for Spurs to deliver collectively on what his individual efforts deserve. And those individual efforts have been world class.

"Unlike some in the punditry profession, great is not a term I confer lightly on footballers but Kane has the right to be called that.

"Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, Manchester City — he would walk into the starting line-up of any of those teams. The window of opportunity to do so while in his prime is not big."

Kane is yet to win a trophy at Spurs and there have been continual calls for him to move to a 'bigger club' in search of ultimate glory.

However, the striker has consistently remained loyal to Spurs and performances this season seem to suggest that a trophy is within reach, as is Champions League football.

Spurs are in the Carabao Cup final, while they are making strong progress in the Europa League and are in the midst of the top-four race.

Souness rightly highlights that Kane is running out of chances to secure a big-money move, but for now, he and his Spurs team-mates will be eager to prove it unnecessary.
