Graeme Souness makes frank admission over Liverpool's Super Cup victory over Chelsea

Former Liverpool man Graeme Souness has admitted that Chelsea were the better team in the Super Cup final against the Reds on Wednesday night.

The blues eventually lost out on penalties after 120 minutes of football ended with a two goals a piece draw, with Olivier Giroud, Jorginho and Sadio Mane all finding the net.

Chelsea went into the half time break with the lead, thanks to Giroud's opening strike, before Mane's double turned the game on its head, but Jorginho's extra time penalty ensured that the game would be decided by penalty kicks where goalkeeper Adrian was the hero for the Reds.

Following the game, Souness didn't hold back on his thoughts on Liverpool's performance, singling out one player in particular.

"This guy [Fabinho], twice he had Kante dance past him as if he had Jacques Cousteau boots, lead boots on," he said on Virgin Media Sport Ireland (via The Mirror ).

"They were not Liverpool. I'm not seeing a Liverpool that resembles the Liverpool we saw last season.

Press conference with Frank Lampard after Chelsea's defeat to Liverpool in Super Cup

"I'm amazed Liverpool were more tired than Chelsea - they've had two extra days to rest."

"I expected them to be lively, energetic and win comfortably, even by two or three goals.

"I really thought they were second best for the largest part. I thought Chelsea played better football and had more energy.

"Given Chelsea played Sunday and Liverpool played Friday that should not have been the case."

Blues head coach Frank Lampard also admitted after the game that he thought the stronger team had lost the game.

"For me I felt we were the stronger team. Maybe some bad luck and at times some bad finishing, we need to be more clinical.

"My overall feeling from the game is one of pride in the team’s performance and happiness," he told the media after the match.
