Graeme Souness makes bold claim about Liverpool's defence as he slams Manchester United

Manchester City jumped above Liverpool on Wednesday as they defeated Manchester United to move back to the top of the Premier League .

It was a blow to Liverpool's title hopes as the Blues strengthened their hold on the Premier League.

But there is no doubting whatever happens in the league this season that Liverpool have enjoyed a fantastic campaign.

Jurgen Klopp sets his Liverpool players a challenge in Manchester City title race

On the flip-side, the same cannot be said about rivals Man Utd as they sit sixth and 25 points off the top of the league.

Naturally post-match discussions centred around where United go from here and Liverpool came up as a comparison when Graeme Souness was discussing United's defensive options.

United great Roy Keane had just provided his latest criticism of the Red Devils during Sky Sports' coverage when Souness chimed in and highlighted a clear difference between the Reds and United at the moment.

“If you factor in Joe Gomez instead of the Joel Matip into the back four, along with the goalkeeper, that’s a back-five, providing none of them get bad injuries, that could spend a decade as Liverpool’s back five," Souness told Sky Sports.

"What a foundation that could be. If I was United, I wouldn’t know where to start.

"The team he picked today tells you he’s not sure. The midfield, I’d replace all of them."

Jurgen Klopp outlines Liverpool's summer transfer stance and rules out signing of star name

Whilst Souness might be being a bit ambitious about PFA Player of the Year Virgil van Dijk still playing at the top level when he's 37, the sentiment is still spot on.

Liverpool have built from the back in recent seasons with big-money moves for the likes of Allison and Van Dijk.

If there is a side United could do with copying in the coming seasons, they wouldn't go far wrong looking across to their rivals Liverpool for an approach to replicate.
