Graeme Souness' infamous Rangers horror tackle and the mind-boggling defence that stopped Ally McCoist in his tracks

Rangers legend Ally McCoist can't believe he used to defend old team mate Graeme Souness ' no-frills challenges on the pitch.

On his talkSPORT breakfast slot, McCoist was shown a highlight reel of Souness' worst tackles.

And the record Ibrox goalscorer admitted he had no business sticking up for the player-manager.

McCoist said: "I tried to defend him to the referee!

"But then I'm looking at it and I'm saying to myself: 'Never mind what he was thinking about, what am I thinking about trying to defend him?!'"

Guest Jamie O'Hara added: "How funny is that though, when one of your team mates does an absolute shocker tackle.

"You go over to the ref to think like, 'come on now, he didn't mean it, he went for the ball', and you know damn right that he's tried to two foot him."

One of Souness' most infamous challenges was a lunge on Hibs player George McCluskey.

The tackle led to a red card on the Liverpool legend's Rangers debut in 1986 and sparked a mass brawl.

Co-host Alan Brazil asked: "I can't believe that. Was one of them on George McCluskey?"

To which McCoist replied: "That's not even in his top 10!"
