Graeme Souness identifies two transfers Liverpool need to make this summer

Liverpool have been urged to add two midfielder in the summer transfer window by Graeme Souness.

The Reds are at something of a crossroads following a difficult defence of their Premier League title.

Jurgen Klopp's side are battling to make the top four with huge injury issues hampering their ambitions.

Major absentees has exposed several flaws in the Liverpool squad as they are encouraged to consider a squad reshuffle.

Their midfield has been unable to press as they have in the past and Souness wants to see several additions made in that area.

He wrote in the Times: "If Jurgen Klopp continues to play this way, which he will, Liverpool need to sign a couple of high-intensity, athletic midfielders.

"They also need their central defensive partnership of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez back fit and settled, Alisson back to the form he’s shown before this season and Sadio Mane to start scoring again.

"Also, Diogo Jota, who has proved a good signing, needs to keep putting the front three under pressure for their places, if they want to get back to challenging Man City again."

Souness has also underlined the need for Liverpool to make the top four.

Failure to play in the Champions League is likely to have implications for Reds in the market as they attempt to attract players.

"After their midweek Champions League exit, Liverpool need to focus on making the top four," said the Sky pundit.

"Failing to could have serious implications for next season, as Mo Salah has sent a few signals out that he could be open to a summer move.

"These days, if the top players really want to move, they tend to get their way. It could be a similar scenario to Harry Kane’s at Tottenham – that if he’s not going to play in the Champions League next season that makes his mind up."
