Graeme Souness fired 'behave' warning as Rangers legend and riled Jamie Carragher battle over horror tackle

Graeme Souness and fellow Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher have clashed in a testy bust-up over Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford's horror challenge on Virgil van Dijk.

The former Celtic defender limped off from the Merseyside derby after the careless lunge and it later emerged he will be out for months with an ACL injury.

The pundits were involved in the heated debate on Sky Sports late last night after Spurs 3-3 draw with West Ham.

Souness provoked the Scouser's ire when he suggested referees have to protect players - a sentiment that Carragher felt was a bit rich coming from a man with such a bruising reputation for physicality.

Here's the exchange in full.

Carragher: "These things unfortunately happen in football."

Souness: "But it's the bigger picture we are talking about. The referees are there to protect players. I'm not saying..."

Carragher: "Oh Graeme. With the tackles you did!"

Souness: "Different generation. And of course I'm guilty of..."

Carragher: "Behave Graeme!"

Souness: "What am I saying that's wrong?

"I'm saying they are there to protect players.

"Jordan Pickford didn't set out to damage Virgil van Dijk.

"But my point is if a referee on the pitch and doesn't see anything wrong with that and it's not a sending off, it then goes to VAR and they still don't see anything wrong with it, that's where it's wrong."
