Graeme Souness believes Leeds United have helped Liverpool to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead this season in the defence of their Premier League title.
Jurgen Klopp's side encountered a stern test on the opening weekend, with the Whites fighting back from behind three times to put Liverpool under pressure.
Only a late penalty from Mohamed Salah, securing his hat-trick, could get Liverpool over the line to take all three points, as newly-promoted Leeds marked their return to the top-flight with a bang.
However, Souness believes the match has provided Klopp with ammunition to propel his side on during the season ahead as they will face similar challenges throughout the campaign.
“I think that has been a great night for Liverpool in the sense that the manager can say that this is what they’re going to get, you’re the champions, you’re everybody’s cup final,” he told Sky Sports.

"Everyone is going to work as hard between now and the end of the season.
" I think Leeds have done Liverpool an enormous favour tonight."
Liverpool face another challenge next week when they travel to face Frank Lampard's Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, following the Blues' hefty spending spree.
