Graeme Souness defends Tottenham approach in West Ham collapse

Graeme Souness has defended Tottenham over claims they attempted to sit on their three-goal lead against West Ham.

Jose Mourinho's men led by three goals against the Hammers until the 82nd minute but still only came away with a point, conceding three late goals, including a super strike from Manuel Lanzini to level the score four minutes into stoppage time.

Following the game, many claimed Spurs were punished for trying to sit on their lead rather than attempting to add to it, but former Liverpool midfielder turned pundit didn't think so.

“Was it Spurs sitting off, or did West Ham up their game? For me, West Ham upped their game," he told Sky Sports.

"They got caught cold 45 seconds in, what’s just happened? At 3-0 down, they’re entitled - some of them - to feel sorry for themselves.

"I didn’t see that from West Ham today. If we go back to the first game of the season when they lost to Newcastle, you think this is gonna be a difficult year for West Ham. Then you put up the next seven or eight fixtures, and think where are they gonna get points from that? They’re a different team.

"For Spurs, I don’t think they sat back, I think they were made to sit back."

Souness also questioned the Spurs midfield and whether Jose Mourinho should be questioning his defence.

"The Spurs team, the front three are gonna be a handful for anyone.

"In midfield, they’ve got energy and aggression with Hojbjerg, Sissoko and Ndombele, when the game goes on, can they keep the ball, take the sting out of the game by keeping possession, I don’t think so.

"Do they have enough at the back? I personally don’t think so. Also, there’s a question mark about the goalkeeper. Spurs this year will be a great watch as well.”
