Graeme Souness defends Rangers with 'monster club' response as legend bites back over 'bigger and better' claim

Bristling Graeme Souness has defended Rangers after being asked if Steven Gerrard was headed for "bigger and better things" in his next job.

The former Ibrox manager himself left Govan for Liverpool in 1991 but he's adamant that you only move for a different challenge rather than a bigger club.

Gerrard has led his side 23 points clear of Celtic in the title race this term while topping his side's Europa League group.

This has brought speculation that a club from a stronger league, or even his beloved Liverpool, may swoop to offer him a route out of Scottish football.

But Souness was adamant that Rangers are a "monster club" and any move would be sideways at best.

He said on the Robbie Fowler podcast : "I don’t think you get much bigger and better than Rangers. Rangers, as you know, is a monster football club. Don’t underestimate the size of Glasgow Rangers.

"If it was a level playing field, if they had the same money coming in from television as the big clubs in England, if they were playing in the Premier League, they’d be challenging for the title, make no mistake of that.

"History has been unkind to them the way the game has evolved in Scotland and money has been introduced through television to England.

"Getting back to Steven, he’s done a wonderful job. If you go back to last year when they played Celtic, they were better. But they came back from Dubai very much in it, this time last year, and blew up for whatever reason.

"This year they’ve been sensational with their consistency and that’s how you win leagues. You also have to say factor in that Celtic have imploded. Celtic have imploded on the field and off the field.

"They had a difficult time at Rangers. He went in there at a very difficult time. He’s done a brilliant job but it’s not about bigger and better when you leave Glasgow Rangers. It’s a different challenge."

While he is a legend at both clubs, the 67-year-old has no doubt who is ahead in the pecking order when it comes to his affections.

He said: "I was a Rangers supporter as a boy, that was my first love. You look at results for all the clubs you’ve been involved in throughout your career, the first two I look for are Liverpool and Rangers.

"Rangers slightly first, sorry to say."
