Liverpool legend Graeme Souness has defended Jose Mourinho over his efforts at Tottenham, claiming the squad was not up to scratch at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Mourinho lost his job as Spurs boss this morning amid a disappointing run of form that has left the north London club seventh in the Premier League.
After Friday's 2-2 draw with Everton, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy decided he would pull the trigger on Mourinho and a meeting took place between the two this morning.
The result was Mourinho losing his job after 17 months, just days before this weekend's Carabao Cup final between Spurs and Manchester City.
But while many agree with the decision based on the job Mourinho has done, Souness believes the experience Portuguese boss wasn't helped by an under-par squad.
"You sack a manager in a week of a cup final and it comes to my head that there have been incidents that have made their chairman make a decision," he told Sky Sports.
"Will it improve or lessen their chances? We will find out.
"When the job became available, it was a team that got the Champions League final, you think there can't be that much wrong with it.
"But when he got there he realised that it was not the squad it was.
"They should never have got to a final. They lost 13 league games, they beat Ajax and Man City on the way to the final and they should never have beaten those teams, but they got there and once he got there, he probably realised they just weren't as good as he thought they were."
Former Spurs midfielder Ryan Mason will now take charge ahead of Wednesday's Premier League clash with Southampton and this weekend's Carabao Cup final.
