Graeme Souness calls out Mikel Arteta for Everton claim and slams 'embarrassing' Arsenal star

Graeme Souness slammed Mikel Arteta for suggesting Arsenal should have been awarded a penalty against Everton during their 1-0 defeat at the Emirates on Friday evening.

And the former Liverpool and Blackburn Rovers manager also called out goalkeeper Bernd Leno for his 'embarrassing' own goal which led to Everton taking all three points back to Goodison Park.

Arteta claimed 'enough is enough' with VAR after a penalty was initially awarded by referee Jonathan Moss, who adjudged Richarlison to have fouled Dani Ceballos in the penalty area.

The initial VAR check agreed with Moss only for the decision to be overturned when Nicolas Pepe was ruled offside in the build-up.

Souness responded on Sky Sports: "At any sport at the highest level you have to play with aggression. Arsenal were lacking that.

"There was nothing to get you excited. When a manager comes on and highlights the penalty they should have had, which was never a penalty, if that is what you are hanging your hat on to get a result that isn’t good.

"It wasn't a penalty. Was it offside? There is an argument it wasn't offside, but if you’re hanging your hat on someone diving to get you a penalty that is not a good sign."

Leno allowed a weak Richarlison effort to deflect through his hands and into the back of the net for the only goal of the game as Everton took a six point lead over their hosts in the Premier League.

Souness added: "Yeah, it’s farcical. That really is a very, very poor goal to give away, an embarrassing goal to give away."
