Graeme Souness blasts 'pathetic' Erik Lamela over Tottenham star's role in Anthony Martial's red

Graeme Souness blasted Erik Lamela as pathetic following his role in Anthony Martial's red card for Manchester United.

The French attacker saw red after retaliating to an elbow from Lamela as the two jostled before a corner kick.

Martial clipped Lamela in the neck with his hand as he pushed the 28-year-old away, which sent Lamela tumbling to the ground.

Referee Anthony Taylor opted to send Martial off, with Lamela only seeing a yellow for his role in the handbags.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness labelled the Spurs star pathetic and said he should have been sent off if Martial's offence was considered a red.

Souness also said that it was not behaviour he liked seeing in the Premier League, arguing it would be looked upon more favourably in Lamela's Argentinian homeland.

"If Martial is going, Lamela has to go," he said.

"You raise your hands, I think Lamela’s tried to push him off, Martial lashes out, it’s like a tickle across your chops.

"He’s gone down, it’s pathetic, it’s very Latin. If one goes, both have to go.

"Is that what our game is about? Is that what the English Premier League is about? We want to say the British do it differently.

"I’ve played in a Latin country, I’ve worked in a Latin country, I know how they see the game.

"Lamela will sleep well tonight because he’ll think he’s done a great piece of work for his team.

"That is not us, that is not what our game is about."
