Graeme Souness blames Liverpool after VAR disallows goal vs Aston Villa

Liverpool thought they had grabbed a well earned equaliser against Aston Villa just before half-time only for VAR to add to its controversial decisions tally and disallow the strike for offside.

Roberto Firmino scooped the ball into the net after the Reds had wasted at least a succession of good chances at Anfield only for the officials to intervene when they finally did have the ball in the net.

VAR scrutinised the strike at length, looking closely at Matty Cash's involvement as the Villa defender appeared to attempt to play the ball.

However, the decision was made that Cash did not touch the ball and Diogo Jota was in an offside position in the build up - although Liverpool fans are still confused as to what part of the Portugal international's anatomy was actually in an offside position.

Graeme Souness was in the Sky Sports studio and seemed to blame Liverpool's current poor form for why the decision went against them and suggested his former side should be more concerned over their missed chances.

Commenting on the play previous to the incident he said: "Great ball from Trent, Cash will be disappointed - if that had led to a goal, that he didn’t get a foot on that.

"When the ball ends up with Firmino, he gets lucky because he’s actually swiped at it. You’re thinking from that angle, what he’s done is picked his spot, but he’s not, he’s swiped at it from the outside of his foot."

But Souness avoided picking a definite side over whether Jota was offside or not and instead concentrated on the Reds being unable to take advantage when chances present themselves, which has unfortunately become a trend this season.

The ex-Liverpool manager also says the Champions League quarter-final might be playing on the current Premier League champions' minds.

"I think we’ll clear it up with the spin of the ball when we see it from different angles. It’s so tight, like the one last night, you have to look more than once at it," Souness said.

"Liverpool have huffed and puffed, I don’t know, is it because they’re feeling sorry for themselves because of what happened against Real Madrid?

"Have they got one eye on the second Real Madrid game? They’re not at it, whichever way you carve it up and look at it - they’re not at it. They’re not playing with the same urgency and aggression which for three years prior to this season, you were saying that’s what Liverpool are all about - it’s not there this year.”

Jamie Carragher, on co-commentating duty for the fixture at Anfield, was more adamant over his unhappiness with the decision.

The former defender explained the incident shows the recent change in the implementation of the offside rule thanks to the introduction of VAR.

He said: "I know people will say it's because it's a Liverpool decision, but I've been consistent throughout. It's the one that really gets to people, these tight offsides. We've lost level, basically, what we all deemed level before VAR came in, we've lost that."
