Graeme Souness believes Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani highlight Manchester United problem

Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani ‘show that Manchester United have no forward planning’, according to Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness.

Cavani and Ronaldo appeared up front together for the first time in the 3-0 demolition of Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday as United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer switched to a 3-5-2 system.

Both players managed to get themselves on the scoresheet as Ronaldo cleverly peeled off Ben Davies’ shoulder before superbly volleying in after his compatriot Bruno Fernandes picked him out with a pinpoint cross.

In the 64th minute Ronaldo played in an onside Cavani whose stylish clipped finish doubled the lead before Marcus Rashford coolly slotted home four minutes from time to wrap up the win.

But despite the impressive performance, Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness believes the two strikers show the problem their club has in forward planning after both players arrived on the final day of successive summer transfer windows.

Souness told Sky Sports: "There's no forward planning, with Cavani or Ronaldo.

"They got Cavani on the very last day of a transfer window a couple of years ago. They've taken Ronaldo in similar circumstances. There's no forward planning.

"This is a jigsaw that's just shuffling it around and working it out as it comes in. Sometimes it works. He might have got lucky. But it was Tottenham they were playing.

"Take that team with the same performance against Liverpool last week, they wouldn't be beaten 5-0 but they'd still be beat. That's how far they have to go. Don't be carried away with what happened on Saturday."

Cavani arrived at Old Trafford on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain on the final day of the 2020 summer transfer window, and Ronaldo's return was finally completed on the last day of the 2021 summer window.
