Graeme Souness and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink agree on Leeds United penalty claim against Arsenal

Graeme Souness and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink agree that Leeds United should have been awarded a penalty against Arsenal.

The Whites were 4-0 down shortly after half-time when goals from Pascal Str uijk and Helder Costa looked like they might spark an unlikely comeback against Arsenal.

With 15 minutes left, Patrick Bamford went down in the penalty area under pressure from multiple defenders but referee Stuart Attwell waved play on and VAR did not deem the decision worth of review.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Souness argued that Leeds deserved more for their second-half performance and said it should have been a definite penalty.

Beren Cross on Arsenal 4-2 Leeds

He said: "It’s hard because Arsenal were so good in the first half.

"They were the best team in the second half, Leeds, but big decisions have gone against them, I think. I definitely think Bamford deserved a penalty."

He later added: "It’s a great shout, apart from anything, it’s a great move. Slick passing, one-touch, brilliant, and when we see it from another angle, there’s nothing on the ball, no Arsenal player touches the ball here.

"The last touch comes from Bamford and he’s just taken out of it. I’m sorry, but he’s just sandwiched between two players."

Hasselbaink agreed, arguing that the decision was one that should have been looked at by VAR.

The former Whites striker said that, anywhere else on the pitch, it would have been a foul, so it should also have been deemed a penalty kick.

He said: "VAR, where are we? Everywhere on the pitch, if this happens - it’s a free-kick, so why is it not a penalty? Simple as that."
