Graeme Souness and Paolo Di Canio both believe that Chelsea have a great chance of winning things this season after re-signing Romelu Lukaku.
The 28-year-old striker became the Blues’ record signing on Thursday after the club agreed on a £97.5million fee with Serie A giants Inter Milan.
Thomas Tuchel identified the striker position as one that needed strengthening earlier in the window after agreeing to sell Olivier Giroud to AC Milan, whilst also deeming Tammy Abraham – who is closing in on a move to Roma – surplus to requirements.
Even before Lukaku returned to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea were one of the most feared teams in Europe after a significant resurgence under Tuchel that led to the Blues winning the Champions League for the second time.
And now with him back in Chelsea colours, Liverpool legend turned Sky Sports pundit, Souness, has tipped Lukaku to lead Chelsea to Premier League glory.
Speaking on Sky Sports before Tottenham’s game with Manchester City on Sunday, Souness said: “You know how Chelsea are under the new manager, he is getting a tune out of everyone.
“With the addition of Lukaku it makes them genuine championship contenders. If he stays fit he will get 20+ goals in that team. He looks a different animal since leaving.”
Souness isn’t the only one who thinks that Chelsea will be even better with Lukaku in their line-up, as West Ham legend Di Canio has also stated why he is such a good signing.
“With Lukaku, he adds something more,” Di Canio told Sky Sports, via sempreinter.
“When Chelsea broke up the games last year they kept them in the balance, they did not close them. The team was already strong like this, but with Lukaku he adds something.”
The Blues looked impressive without Lukaku in their 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday, and they’ll be looking to make it two out of two in the Premier League – perhaps with their new talisman in the team – when they travel across London to face Arsenal next weekend.
