Graeme Souness 'advising' Rangers board on manager search

Graeme Souness will reportedly play a key role in the Rangers managerial search.

The board has reportedly enlisted the former Ibrox boss to assist in appointing the next manager in Glasgow.

It's claimed Souness is advising chairman John Bennett, chief executive James Bisgrove and director Graeme Park as they plot Michael Beale's successor.

The Daily Record suggests Souness - who turned down an ambassadorial role at Ibrox - is offering up his expertise to aid the managerial recruitment drive.

It's even claimed Souness was involved in discussions last week alongside Rangers representatives as Frank Lampard was ruled out of the running for the job.

It comes as the Rangers Review reports the search for a new manager will ramp up in the coming days with Bennett and Bisgrove preparing for final interviews in London.

Kevin Muscat, Phillipe Clement and Oliver Glasner have all been put forward as potential candidates for the job.

Reports that Billy Davies, Ryan Lowe and Scott Parker are in the running have been dismissed.

Beale was sacked by Rangers last weekend after defeat to Aberdeen with Steven Davis placed as interim manager at the club.

Despite suffering defeat to Aris Limassol on Thursday in the Europa League, Davis did get Rangers back to winning ways against St Mirren on Sunday.

After the match, asked about his position regarding the Ibrox job on a full-time basis he commented:  "Listen, my full focus has been on the last few days. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind and pretty hectic with everything. We always wanted to get these games out of the way and have a chat.

"I’m sure the club and board will be working diligently trying to get the right person in place but I’m not sure when that’ll be."

Pushed on whether he'd like to be considered, Davis added: "I haven’t even considered it and that’s the honest truth."
