Graeme Souness admits Paul Pogba admiration as he defends himself over criticism

Graeme Souness admits he gets hammered for his criticisms of Paul Pogba.

But the Scot insists he is in no doubts about the Manchester United star’s quality - he just wants him to work harder.

The Liverpool legend’s numerous critiques of the World Cup winner are often themselves taken apart and dissected on social media.

There are many who believe the Souness is overly-critical of the £89million star, and has an agenda against him.

Pogba was back in United’s starting lineup for the 3-0 win over Sheffield United on Wednesday night, impressing at the heart of the action for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men.

And speaking on Sky Sports on Wednesday night, Souness insisted that he feels his remarks remain valid where the Frenchman is concerned.

“I get hammered for it,” said Souness. “I am not going to say I am a fan [of him], I am a fan of his talent.

“Midfield is the only position on the pitch where someone wants to do the exact same job you're doing.

“I am a fan of his ability. But I want him to work harder.

“I get a fair bit of criticism for criticising Paul Pogba but for me he doesn't work hard enough for me. For talent he is right up there.”

Souness reserved special praise for Pogba’s new midfield colleague, Bruno Fernandes, however.

The January signing from Sporting Lisbon is still to taste defeat in a United shirt and Souness has been impressed with how the Portuguese can find spaces to cause opponents defensive issues.

“Modern midfielders get away with the easy option but Fernandes is always looking to get to those positions.

“I am a big fan so far.”
