Graeme Murty details how Rangers outcast Eros Grezda helps younger players

Graeme Murty insists Rangers flop Eros Grezda has been a massive help to his young reserve players.

The Ibrox coach has used the Albanian a number of times this season after he was bombed from the first team into the development squad.

Grezda has flopped at Rangers since his big money move from Osijek last summer but Murty is delighted to be able to use him and reckons he has a big role in developing his young squad.

The latest game saw him play 70 minutes for Rangers against Hibs development squad with late goals from Nathan Young-Coombes and Jamie Barjonas rescuing a 2-2 draw.

The Easter Road side had taken the lead through Josh Doig and Jamie Gullan but the second half fight back pleased Murty.

He told RangersTV: “Having Eros with us as we have done, he is a full international, the guys got electric feet and an understanding of the broader game that our guys sometimes don’t have so for us to learn of them is really good.

“Our guys are in charge of their own careers and they have to drive their own careers now and having those guys along will give them guidelines and steps on how they are going to make improvements but ultimately they need to own it and push forward with their own development.

“I thought you saw people learning and taking steps towards that today so as an exercise and as a game I thank Hibs for coming and being as challenging as they were.

“Our guys need to be challenged, they need to be pushed and they need to be stretched and I thought they managed to overcome most of the challenges that we saw in the game.”

Jamie Murphy also played 45 minutes for the Ibrox kids as he continues his comeback from a serious knee injury.

The 30-year-old has been out of action for more than a year and Murty revealed that he had made the request to drop down and build his fitness.

He added: “Jamie actually asked to play, so for him to want to come and play in this group I think shows that he trusts this group.

“He knows that we are going to give him the ball and he knows that we can handle the ball and we can actually serve as a vehicle for him to get to where he wants to be."
