Graeme Mathie to become Ayr United chief executive as former Hibs sporting director joins Honest Men

Graeme Mathie is set to return to football with Ayr United.

The former Hibs sporting director has agreed to return to the game at Somerset Park.

Mathie is set to join the Championship side as their chief executive and to run the footballing operation for chairman David Smith.

Manager Jim Duffy will remain in charge of first-team affairs.

Mathie left Hibs in September as chairman Ron Gordon moved to appoint his own football staff.

Manager Jack Ross was also fired earlier this month and the Easter Road club are now actively searching for a new boss ahead of the Premier Sports Cup final on Sunday.

Mathie was responsible for bringing in some top talent like Kevin Nisbet and Martin Boyle and opening the pathway to bring the likes of Ryan Porteous and Josh Doig through.

Mathie was criticised for the late collapse on deadline day of Jamie McGrath's move from St Mirren although he was only given an hour to complete a deal which could have included two Hibs players.

He had also been linked with a possible job to Celtic where he began his scouting career.
