Graeme Jones to focus on Newcastle after stepping down from England role

Newcastle United assistant manager Graeme Jones has stepped down from his position as England coach.

The former Luton Town boss aided Gareth Southgate during the European Championships and helped lead the Three Lions to the final of a major competition for the first time since 1966.

The door was understood to be open for Jones to remain as part of the World Cup qualifying set-up moving forward.

But Jones will focus on life at Newcastle and will not travel to Budapest for England's next game with Hungary.

Jones had supported Steve Holland and Southgate this summer with England failing to lose a game in regulation time during his tenure.

And only a penalty shoot-out defeat against Italy in the final showpiece dented England's record this summer.
