Graeme Jones has a new role with England for Euro 2020 but why Newcastle fans don't need to worry

Newcastle United assistant Graeme Jones will aid Gareth Southgate's bid to lead England to Euro 2020 glory this summer.

The pair did their Pro Licence course together many years ago and Southgate previously asked Jones to be his assistant when he was in charge of England's under-21 side.

Although Jones turned down that role - the Gateshead native already had his hands full as a No 2 at Everton - he has remained in touch with Southgate.

Following striker coach Allan Russell's recent departure, Jones has answered his country's call and the former Belgium assistant will link up with the Three Lions when their preparations for the Euros start on Saturday.

Newcastle have confirmed that the 51-year-old will then return to his role with the Magpies after the tournament as Steve Bruce's side prepare for the new season.

"We won't have a like-for-like replacement in that sort of specific area of work," Southgate told reporters on Zoom after announcing his provisional squad for Euro 2020.

"I'm disappointed for Allan and for us that situation has occurred but we're really pleased to be able to bring Graeme Jones in, who is obviously working with Newcastle at the moment.

"I have known Graeme quite a while. He's got fantastic experiences of tournament football with Belgium, of course, with Roberto Martinez and great experiences as an assistant manager and a manager.

"So I'm really pleased with Steve Holland, with Graeme, with Martyn Margetson, who's been to semi-finals with us and with Wales, and with Chris Powell that we've got a really strong coaching team and we're really looking forward to that challenge."
