Graduating students told to plan ceremony journeys amid Extinction Rebellion delays risk

Students travelling to graduations in Bristol tomorrow (July 19) have been warned to plan for possible delays.

Extinction Rebellion protests, which began on Monday, have been causing traffic problems and bus diversions across the city.

The University of Bristol and the University of the West of England (UWE) are recommending that people attending ceremonies tomorrow should give themselves as much time as possible to get there.

A Bristol University spokesman said: “We have contacted the students who are attending the three graduation ceremonies on Friday to advise them about the protest and to plan for possible delays to their journey.”

The spokesman said the university would be keeping a “close eye” on developments and would keep students informed.

He added: “If, for whatever reason, students are running late for their ceremony, they should contact the graduation team as soon as possible.”

UWE has told students through its website that there is a possibility of “disruption” to travel plans.

The university has written: “We strongly advise you to plan ahead and leave yourselves with as much time as possible to get to your ceremony.”

Updates will be posted on the university’s Twitter account. Queries can be sent to @UWEBristol using the hashtag #UWEGraduation.

Alternatively, you can email graduation@uwe.ac.uk or call 0117 32 83934.

The climate activists’ action is expected to draw to a close later tomorrow.
