Graduate of Edinburgh Heriot-Watt among victims of Iran air crash disaster

A Heriot-Watt University graduate has been named as the third British man killed when a Ukrainian passenger plane crashed in Iran.

BP Engineer Sam Zokaei was flying home to London via Kyiv when the jet went down shortly after take off near Tehran, killing all 176 passengers and crew.

Zokaei studied at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, leaving in 2004 with a masters in petroleum engineering.

The 42-year-old was reportedly on holiday in his native Iran where he had been visiting relatives.

Family and friends have been paying tribute to him as an "amazing caring friend."

One wrote on Facebook: "I still can't believe it. My heart is so broken. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

"May God give them the strength to get through these horrible times. Condolences to everyone who knew him and loved him.

Zokaei was named as a victim in the disaster alongside Brighton businessman Mohammed Reza Kadkhoda-Zadeh, 40, and construction firm engineer Saeed Tahmasebi Khademasadi, 35, whose new wife, Niloofar Ebrahim also lost her life.

He worked as senior reservoir engineer and had been at the oil firm BP for 14 years. 

In a statement the company said:“ We are shocked and deeply saddened by this tragic loss of our friend and colleague and all of our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
