Grading the Ravens’ re-signing of ILB Josh Bynes

The Baltimore Ravens have seen plenty of their own free agents depart during the 2022 offseason. However, they’ve also re-signed a few of their own, one of which is inside linebacker Josh Bynes, who agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the team.

This will mark Bynes fourth stint with Baltimore, dating back to when he signed with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent during the 2012 offseason. Each time he’s returned to the team he’s been a steady presence who’s a willing tackler and underrated in pass coverage.

In his second and third go-arounds with Baltimore, Bynes was added to the active roster in the middle of the regular season and provided stability to the inside linebacker core as well as the entirety of the defense. During the 2021 season he helped the young linebackers on the roster such as Patrick Queen, and there was a noticeable shift in how the Ravens played.

Baltimore was interested in another free agent inside linebacker in former Seattle Seahawk Bobby Wagner. He ended up signing with Los Angeles Rams, and so the Ravens ended up going with a familiar face in Bynes.

All and all, Bynes represents a value signing that won’t break the bank but can provide solid play on the field as well as great leadership off of it. It feels like a smart move for the team, and one that many have gotten behind.

Grade: A-
