Grading the Lions selection of EDGE rusher Austin Bryant

After trading back with the Falcons, the Detroit Lions have selected defensive end Austin Bryant out of Clemson with the 117th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Bryant was part of a Clemson defensive line that featured three first-round picks this year. With 21.0 career sacks and 37 tackles-for-loss, it is clear that he has the potential to be a starting edge rusher on this defense eventually.

The 22-year-old defensive end uses his length to his advantage and has shown his ability to both set the edge and rush the passer. He also excels as a tackler, with 130 career tackles in his four seasons as a Tiger.

Bryant missed the NFL Combine this year due to a pectoral injury, which he played through for several games of the 2018 season. His injury could be the reason for some inconsistency in his Senior season, but his college production shows that he has the tools to be a pass rusher in the NFL.

His rookie season could be spent learning behind Trey Flowers, Devon Kennard and Romeo Okwara, being used as a rotational defensive lineman.

Overall, Bryant has a ton of upside that makes him a solid pick for the Detroit Lions. He has the size needed to be successful at the position and has shown off his athletism during his four years at Clemson, though he doesn’t have the Combine or pro day numbers to back that up. He shows excellent speed off the line and will be a contributor on this defense.

Grade: B
